Critical CVSS 9.9

CVE-2026-66898

NVD analysis in progress

A path traversal vulnerability in LXD allows an attacker to manipulate file system paths during backup import and restore operations. When importing or restoring a backup archive, LXD fails to validate instance and storage volume names contained within the archive metadata. An attacker can exploit this flaw by supplying a crafted backup archive with malicious instance or volume names containing path traversal sequences, potentially allowing file access or overwriting outside the designated restore directory.

What this means

Exposure
Exploitable remotely over the network, with an ordinary user account and with no action from the victim.
Impact
An attacker can read sensitive data, modify or destroy data and take the service offline. The impact spreads beyond the vulnerable component into other parts of the system.
Weakness
An attacker-supplied file path is not confined, letting them read or write outside the intended folder.
Likelihood
Its EPSS score stays low: nothing points to imminent exploitation, which is no reason to leave it unpatched.
