High CVSS 7

CVE-2026-69097

NVD analysis in progress

GitPython before 3.1.53 fails to properly escape section names in git config files, allowing attackers to inject arbitrary configuration directives through malicious submodule names. Attackers can inject core.sshCommand or other dangerous config keys into the victim's .git/config via create_submodule or clone_from operations, achieving remote code execution when git performs ssh operations.

What this means

Exposure
Exploitable with local access to the machine and without authentication — but only if a user opens booby-trapped content. The attack does require particular conditions, which makes it less systematic.
Impact
An attacker can read sensitive data, modify or destroy data and take the service offline.
Weakness
Unneutralised input is placed into a command that another component then interprets.
Likelihood
Its EPSS score stays low: nothing points to imminent exploitation, which is no reason to leave it unpatched.
