In June 2026, it’s a legitimate option — and for many players, the better one.

This isn’t about ideology. It’s about engineering: Proton has turned Windows from a requirement into a runtime dependency most games no longer need.

How Proton Made Windows Optional

Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer built on Wine, augmented with two graphics translation engines: DXVK (Direct3D 9/10/11 → Vulkan) and VKD3D-Proton (Direct3D 12 → Vulkan).   • Multi-store players (Steam + Epic + GOG) willing to set up Lutris and Heroic. The learning curve is real — two additional launchers to configure, runners to select — but once dialed in, the experience is seamless.

Who should keep Windows:

  • Competitive players of Valorant, Call of Duty, Destiny 2, and any title using kernel-level anti-cheat with no Linux equivalent. This lock is structural, not technical, and it won’t break in 2026.
  • Content creators who depend on Windows-only tools — OBS Studio runs on Linux, but some proprietary plugins and codecs have no equivalent.
