KDE Plasma 6.8 drops native X11 sessions after thirty years

Released on October 14, 2026 to mark KDE’s 30th anniversary, Plasma 6.8 makes Wayland the only supported display protocol for Plasma sessions, with X11 still available through XWayland. For Linux desktop fleets, it is the signal to plan the Wayland switch before Plasma 6.9, due in late February 2027.
