selfh.st’s 2026 user survey opened on October 7, 2026 with 45 questions and, for the first time, a section dedicated to AI. If you run self-hosted services, respond before the October 31 deadline: it is the largest public dataset on the community, and its results will shape the ecosystem in 2027.
Unraid and 45HomeLab have opened pre-orders for the X4, a pre-assembled four-bay home server shipped with Unraid OS pre-installed, starting at $1,199 and delivering in October 2026. For anyone torn between building their own box and buying a locked-down NAS, that price defines a third path — provided you read the trade-offs.
On 1 October 2026, Raspberry Pi raised the 2 GB Pi 4 and Pi 5 by $12.50 each, caught up by memory costs that keep climbing. The 2 GB Pi 4 now costs $67.50 and the 2 GB Pi 5 $77.50: right-size your purchases and stop paying for RAM you don’t need.
On 21 September 2026, Jeff Geerling documented a firmware lock, introduced in late 2024, that prevents swapping the RAM chips on a Raspberry Pi 5. The move targets resellers who modify entry-level boards, but it also removes the right to repair and upgrade your hardware.
A Tom’s Hardware study shows DDR5 prices climbed 500% in twelve months, with a 128 GB kit reaching $3,399, driven by hyperscaler demand for DRAM. Self-hosters should buy capacity on a two-to-three-year horizon instead of waiting for a drop.
The Proxmox VE 8 branch, released in June 2023 on Debian 12, reaches end of life in August 2026: hypervisor patches stop even though Debian LTS continues. For anyone running Ceph or old containers, the VE 9 upgrade is two separate projects — and a rollback that goes through restore, not reverse migration.
Over six months, Tailscale hit nineteen corruption incidents caused by a sixteen-year-old data race in SQLite’s WAL-reset path. If you self-host SQLite-backed apps, check the bundled version and stay on the beaten path.
In August 2026, the self-hosted ecosystem is undergoing a quiet but decisive shift: compact language models (Gemma 3 1B, quantized Llama 4 3B, Qwen 3 0.5B) now enable local conversational AI on consumer hardware. Here's what's realistic today, what isn't yet, and how to start without blowing your power bill.
WireGuard has been in the Linux kernel since March 2020, Tailscale crossed $100M ARR in early 2026, and Headscale has passed 42,000 GitHub stars. If you self-host more than two services, a free or self-controlled mesh VPN transforms remote access without a single firewall rule.
DN42 counted over 1,800 AS numbers and 12,000 announced prefixes as of April 2026. BIRD 2.16 and FRRouting 10.2 make BGP peering accessible from a single Docker container, and a /48 IPv6 prefix takes under 30 lines of config to announce.
